The green marine industry is the new ‘thing’ that has gained momentum over the last few years. The idea of the green ship is to make the shipping industry greener and less harmful to the environment. Both the manufacturing and administrative levels are adopting these new technologies to ensure that the contribution to global pollution is reduced. Every vessel owner and companies are trying to take advantage of these technologies to reduce environmental footprint. From designing to maintaining the ship, every stratum in the shipping circuit has to strictly adhere to the rules and regulations of making a green ship. A few benchmarks have already been set, however, becoming more and more aware of the technology that implements the green ship is becoming popular.
Be it night ferries or passenger ferries for sale, the effort to make a green ship is prevalent largely. Here are the seven technologies that are being adopted at large to get the ultimate green ship. Keep reading to find out more.
Tech 1: Using LNG fuel
According to experts, LNG is the fuel of the future, majorly for the shipping industry. Not only does it help control air pollution by reducing the carbon footprint, combining LNG with diesel oil can help increase the overall performance of the ships. This can, in turn, reduce fuel consumption. Hence, using LNG fuel can bring about a massive change, a positive for sure, in the shipping industry.
Tech 2: A sulfur Scrubber System
While shifting the fuel usage is a tough thing to do, reducing the sulfur emissions from the exhaust can still be achieved. By installing the scrubber system, the sulfur emitted is washed out from the exhaust, which helps reduce 98% of the harmful sulfur emissions. Most of the ferries that are being sold are now installed with the scrubber system.
Tech 3: A Rudder & Propeller System with Advanced Settings
The fuel consumption can be reduced by 4% if the right rudder and propeller system is installed on the ship. With less fuel consumption, the emission of harmful gases also goes down significantly. The latest versions of the rudder and propeller systems have also resulted in the improvement of the speed of the vessel.
Tech 4: Using the Right Paint on the Hull
Paint causes friction and increases the consumption of fuel. Hence, it is important to pay attention to the properties and functions of the hull. Using the correct paint on the hull helps reduce friction, which allows the vessel to save up to 8% of fuel.
Tech 5: Re-circulation of Exhaust Gas
This system aims to reduce the emission of Nitrogen Oxide up to 80%. The process is simple for its cuts down the nitrogen emission by recirculating the exhaust gas from the engine using scavenge air. The temperature of the combustion chamber is reduced by releasing the exhaust air, further combining it with the scavenge air. This reduces the nitrogen content in the latter, thus significantly reducing the amount released.
Tech 6: Using Water in Fuel
This tech might seem a bit odd, but the fact is that adding water in the fuel is extremely effective in reducing Nitrogen Oxide by at least a 30-35%. The water needs to be added to the fuel right before injecting it into the combustion chamber. This can help reduce the temperature inside the cylinder, which in turn reduces the emission of Nitrogen Oxide.
Tech 7: Shifting to Sandwich Plate System
Sandwich Plate System (SPS) is the process of combining and bonding two metal plates together using polyurethane elastomer core. Combining two metal plates instead of using steel allows the ship to be light in weight, thus improving the overall performance of the same. SPS ensures that the vessels become less prone to corrosion, the maintenance required for the ship also diminishes significantly. Adopting the SPS can play a significant role in improving the recycling process of green ships as well.
Hence, it can be well-deduced that to make green ships, these technologies play a monumental role. Adopting the same and applying the green ship technology can have an amazing impact on the environment. All high-speed ferries for sale with the top companies are now in compliance with the green ship technology.
